Our Building

Our building is original to the settlement of Grand Bay, Alabama. It was used as a Post Office during the Civil War, or the "recent unpleasantness" as some of the really old timers call it. The building has also been a boarding house, a mini mall, residential and now our office. The oak tree on the left is over 500 years old.

Working in an old building has its own rewards, like old wiring, and plumbing. It is also a continuous challenge to figure out where to run new network cables.

Of course, this old house has a ghost. She rattles around upstairs and sometimes sets off the alarm system. But we are going to let M. D. Gray tell her story.

Our Name

The name of the business comes from an evening swim in our sales manager's pool. There are owls living in the woods behind Steve's house, and at sunset they come out and start to sing. Their song sounds like laughter. We were looking for an original name for the business, and Muireall said, "how about Laughing Owl?" We all laughed and said that it sounded great.  If you have sound capabilities, the background of this page is the Eastern Screech Owl.  To play the .wav file use this link.

We later found that the laughing owl is an extinct bird. Sceloglaux albifacies was native to New Zealand, and went extinct in 1914. If you are interested, check out the American Museum of Natural History site. We hope not to share this fate.
