In the time before time was recorded, the people of the Orkney Islands were still in close contact with the faery race. One man stole away a selkie queen who had laid aside her seal skin. He brought her to sit beside him for a time in his house on the shore of the land called Skara Brae. They had two daughters, the eldest as dark as the seal folk that followed her mother; the youngest as fair the swans that swam in the bay at sunrise. At last, in the way of faery folk, the selkie queen returned to her own people. The daughters grew to young womanhood without the guidance of their faery mother.
And then, one day, a man came to woo them both.
It was the end of one age and the beginning of another, when men still stood shoulder to shoulder with mystery and magic. But the merging of humanity with faery exacted a terrible price that the people of Skara Brae could not have foreseen.

"This is a brilliantly lyrical and moving story, combining elements of fantasy and mythology, intertwined with enough realism to give new life to this fable. The author's feel and sense for the graceful and beautiful elements in this story is simply a sensory overload - I am moved to tears as well as being totally enthralled by this story. I had a wonderful time in Skara Brae, and I'm sure you will too."
